Happy Reformation Day!

I am on a personal crusade to educate the church on this great holiday that we miss (minus our Lutheran and Reformed brothers)!  Instead of us responding to the world's pagan holiday of celebrating evil and death by having poorly disguised "fall festivals", why not celebrate a true Christian holiday!???

On this day, October 31, 1517, Martin Luther first nailed his 95 Theses to the castle church door in Wittenberg. His attempt was to start a debate amongst the clergy as to the rightness of selling indulgences which was in practice at the time. Unbeknownst to him someone translated his theses from Latin into German and before you know it the Protestant Reformation had begun. (that's the very simplified version!)

So if you are Protestant and believe that God's forgiveness can NOT be bought or earned, celebrate today. It is because of the boldness of Martin Luther that you and I have this knowledge and freedom.

My kids are a little too young to do much of a celebration with yet, but in the future I plan on finding books on Martin Luther and the Reformation to read to them (good luck with the library, the whole system has only TWO children's books on M. Luther). I also want to start a tradition of making German dishes from the area of Wittenberg as no holiday is complete without food. Perhaps when they are older we will also find a PCA/Reformed church and take them to a Reformation Celebration. The PCA church we attend right now has a huge Reformation Event and has all kinds of little game booths and such that all pertain to the history of the Reformation. Too cool!

Anyway, all that to say.... have a Happy Reformation Day!

Dr Martin Luther
