Sickies!

Oh am I ready for this week to be over. Kyle and the kids picked up quite the upper respiratory bug and were sick all week. Kyle even consented to go to the doctor (which is saying something for him!). I fortunately have "dodged the bullet" but am still really tired of runny noses and clingy kids. Also I feel like I had a very unproductive week, which I hate. I don't have much to do in life outside of caring for our home and children so when I can't even do that I feel totally aimless and blah! I'm ready to add some meaning back into my life. I also wish that the weather would warm up so I could get my kiddos outside. They don't do well cooped up and neither do I. Somedays I wish I would have gotten an early childhood degree or something instead of nursing so I would know how to occupy my toddlers day in and day out! Sigh! Sorry for all the griping, just feeling that way right now! :)  The shared bedroom was of course derailed this week as we split the kids up to allow for maximum sleep time. They were just starting to get the hang of going to sleep at the same or close to the same time and now I guess we'll have to start over! Oh well! :) Such is life.

If anyone has creative FREE things to do in so-so weather for toddlers feel free to clue me in!

Terra...one thing that I have found that occupies my toddlers at school for a period of time is to give them a mixing bowl with some flour, dried pasta, uncooked rice and some meassuring cups and spoons and then the pour. For Dean you can give him two bowls and let him pour from one bowl to the other using measuring spoons and the spoons. For Abi you can give her a bigger bowl and let her scoop and dump into the same bowl. They get to make a "mess" but it is easy clean up. They really like flour because it seems to make a big mess but it isn't that hard to clean up. There are the usual things like painting...finger painting...water coloring..."normal" painting. I don't know if you have done this before or not but when I need to clean up my class room, I will give my kids a diaper wipe and then let them help. I have some children that will help me clean for 45 minutes. They love it!!! Also, you can give them the dust pan and hand held broom (I am not sure what you call them but you know the brush that you hold in your hand to brush the pile of dirt in the dust pan...not sure that makes sense.) and they can help clean with that. Another fun activity that my kids NEVER get tired of is bubbles and you can get bubble machines now a days that do the blowing for you. They are battery operated and fairly cheap, I believe. Right now that is about all I can think of. I will let you know if I have any other ideas. I know that you should be able to either buy or find at the library books that have tons of ideas of art and other things to do with toddlers. Good luck!!!!

Thanks Stacey. I have tried the uncooked rice in a cookie sheet and a bowl. It ends up everywhere as Dean finds it more fun to throw it around and "swim" in it. We haven't tried painting in awhile as he doesn't like the mess on his hands, but he might be getting to the age where that would be fun for him. I hadn't thought of bubbles indoors, but that might be fun too. It seems my brain gets so limited. Thanks again for the suggestions! :)

What if you gave Dean a paint brush? Is he more likely to paint that way? I have some one year olds that don't like to get dirty and if I give them a paint brush they will paint that way. Water colors are always fun too. What I do since they aren't really old enough to understand the concept of dipping in ght water and then the paint is that I run the water colors under the faucet for just a second or two and then I give them a paint brush and let them dip in each color and then paint. It is a little less messy than tempra paints. Just a thought.
